On August 12, Insta360 launched the X6, and buried under the 8K headline is a feature called Spatial Capture: point the camera, walk a loop, and the cloud hands you back an explorable radiance-field model of the space. No lidar. No laptop. No photogrammetry PhD.

The Story

For two years, capturing a Gaussian splat meant a ritual. You shot hundreds of overlapping photos or a slow video, fed them to COLMAP, waited, and trained the splat on a beefy GPU. Great results, but a wall for anyone who just wanted the scene, not the pipeline.

Spatial Capture collapses that wall. You film with the X6’s dual 1-inch-equivalent sensors, the app ships the data to the cloud, and a reconstruction service does the heavy lifting before returning a finished splat to your phone. You view it in-app with gyro or joystick controls, jump to WASD on desktop, or share a web link that expires when you want it to.

Here is the detail that made us sit up. The cloud processing is handled by Remy Innovation Technology in Shenzhen — the same team behind KIRI Engine, one of the most respected mobile 3D-scanning apps on the planet. This is not a camera company faking its way into 3D. It is a proven splat-reconstruction engine, wired straight into consumer hardware.

It is also the logical next step from Project ETERNAL, Insta360’s April 2026 heritage-preservation collaboration that splatted archaeological sites. That was the enterprise demo. The X6 is the consumer product it was always pointing toward.

Why You Should Care

Splats are quietly becoming a native asset type everywhere — Blender, Unreal, TouchDesigner, Nuke, even Apple Maps. The bottleneck was never the software. It was capture. Getting a clean, complete splat of a real room, a storefront, a forest clearing, still took gear and patience most artists did not have.

The Honest Caveats

This is not a clean win yet, and we would rather tell you now.

  • US buyers are locked out at launch. The camera ships in the States, but Insta360 says Gaussian splatting is not supported there yet. Frustrating, and worth watching.
  • Pricing is a black box. There is no published cost for the cloud processing, and the terms reserve the right to adjust monthly quotas and consumption rules. Read the fine print before you build a workflow on it.
  • It is cloud, not local. Your capture — spatial imagery, depth, position, orientation — leaves your device and hits a Shenzhen server. That is a real privacy consideration for some projects.
  • Reviewers flag the app. Early X6 reviews praise the image quality and ding the companion app as buggy. Spatial Capture lives inside that app.

When splat capture rides along inside a mainstream consumer camera, powered by a serious reconstruction engine, the technology stops being a specialist’s trick and starts being ambient. The regional lockout and the fuzzy pricing keep us from calling it a slam dunk today. But the direction is unmistakable: the splat capture rig now fits in your pocket, and it costs less than a GPU. The KIRI Engine partnership is what makes this credible though, having an actual proven reconstruction pipeline behind consumer hardware is a very different proposition than a camera company bolting on a gimmick feature.
